Streaming giant Netflix has announced that an animated series titled Exploding Kittens is in development, with voice roles by Tom Ellis, Abraham Lim, Lucy Liu, and more. The series is an adaptation of a card game that the streaming platform is planning to release in May.
The series will tell the story of the eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell as it begins to escalate once God and the Devil both get sent to Earth and are trapped in the bodies of chunky house cats.
The mobile game, titled Exploding Kittens – The Game, will be launched directly on the mobile Netflix app and will be available for free to all Netflix subscribers. The game will be a digital version of the physical card game. It will see players drawing cards from a deck, each with their own special powers, trying to avoid the “exploding kitten” card which will cause you to lose the game. This new version of the game will also come with two exclusive cards, with brand-new powers, with plans of adding more exclusive cards in the future to tie in with the series.
The series will also star Ally Maki, Mark Proksch, and Sasheer Zamata. Shane Kosakowski and Matthew Inman serve as showrunners, with Mike Judge, Greg Daniels, and Dustin Davis serving as executive producers through Bandera Entertainment; Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping serving as executive producers through Chernin Entertainment Group; and the creators of the original card game, Elan Lee and Inman, also serving as executive producers. An official release date for the series is yet to be announced.
This isn’t the first game that Netflix is launching. It will join a catalogue of games like Stranger Things: 1984, Stranger Things 3: The Game, Hextech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story, etc.
Ellis is best known for starring in series like Lucifer and Miranda. Lim has starred in series like Clickbait and The Dead Girls Detective Agency, while Liu is known for the Kill Bill series, Elementary, and will soon be seen next in the upcoming DC film Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
